Healthy Lifestyle: Three Important Steps to Follow

Everyone cares about having a healthy lifestyle, but with our crazy busy lives it gets so hard to stick with it sometimes.
We typically grab a hamburger and a bunch of fries on the go, just to fill up our growling stomachs and rush to run a bunch of errands and take care of kids and household and...
The list never ends...
Who has the time for planning healthy meals and walks and yoga lessons?
If only we had that personal chef to prepare fresh organic meals for us, and a trainer to tone our abs, and someone to help us get more than 6 hours of sleep every night?
Would not that be fantastic?
Would not be nice to have unlimited funds to help us have a healthy lifestyle we deserve?
However, we simply need to know what little changes to make that can add up to big health rewards.

These three easy tricks can help you get healthier right now.
1. Do not Skip Breakfast
Many people do not realize the fact that having breakfast every morning is the secret to staying healthy.
Breakfast is called the most important meal of the day, because it helps to balance our energy levels and curb our midday hunger pangs - thus preventing weight gain.
It is not just a great source of fiber, but also folic acid and vitamin B12.
One cup of fortified whole-grain breakfast cereal has about 400 mcg of folate and 100 mcg of B12 per day, the amount recommended to fight off cold sores.
2. Steam Your Vegetables
Steaming crunchy vegetables, like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower etc. instead of boiling or roasting them - optimizes the amount of cancer-fighting protective chemicals.
The scientists also say that fresh veggies are better than frozen ones, and they may be helpful in reducing breast cancer as well as liver, colon, stomach and other kinds of cancers.
For the most protection we should eat at least half a cup of steamed or fresh greens a day.
3. Get a Little Sun
Every time we think of people with a healthy lifestyle, we imagine fit and tanned people walking on the beach.
Is not that right?
In fact, it is very beneficial to take a 15 minute brisk walk outside without a sunscreen three times a week.
That is because the sunlight helps our body to produce vitamin D which helps to cut your chances of:

1) developing inflammatory bowel disease and other digestive illnesses
2) Crohn's desease
3) osteoporosis
4) and helps to keep your blood pressure in check
Take advantage of the sun benefits early in the morning or after 3 pm in the afternoon when you are less likely to burn.
Just remember that taking vitamins or dietary supplements is not the same as producing vitamins naturally from exposure to sunlight and eating healthy foods.
I really like this quotation of Adelle Davis: "We are indeed much more than what we eat, but what we eat can nevertheless help us to be much more than we are."
Just by following these three simple rules, you will see the changes in your overall health and healthy lifestyle will become your second nature.

What You Need to Know About GMOs

What do soda, fast food French fries, margarine, salad dressing, corn chips, and corn flakes all have in common? They all contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms) also know as genetically modified or engineered foods. Read on for answers to the most commonly asked questions about GMOs.
What are GMOs?
Genetically modified organisms are plants or animals created through the process of genetic engineering. Genetically engineered foods have a piece of DNA from a totally different species, such as bacteria or viruses, spliced into their DNA. Genetically engineered soybeans, for example, have DNA from bacteria and viruses forced into their DNA to help them withstand the onslaught of weed killers such as Roundup. Genetically engineered corn has DNA added so that it has a pesticide built right into it. This process creates a whole new unstable species of plant that would have never occurred in nature. None of the current GMO crops offer increased yield, drought tolerance, or enhanced nutrition.
Hybrid foods are completely different. Hybrids are created when cross pollination occurs between plants. This process can be facilitated by man or it can occur spontaneously in nature.
Which foods are genetically modified?
As of 2012, most corn, soy beans, canola, cotton, and sugar beets are GMO. From these crops, products such as corn oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, high fructose corn syrup, and many more are created and added to processed foods. This is why nearly 80% of processed and most fast foods contain GMOs.

Other crops that are genetically engineered include Hawaiian papaya, a small amount of zucchini and yellow squash, and alfalfa. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is also considering approving a GMO salmon, which would grow much larger and faster than regular salmon.
Are they safe?
Despite what the agricultural industry might say, there is little research on the long-term effects of GMOs on human health and the environment. The FDA has allowed GMOs into our food supply with only the research and assurances of safety from the biotech companies that create them. Interestingly, the person at the FDA responsible for this decision was Michael Taylor, former vice president of public policy at Monsanto (the largest producer of genetically engineered seeds).
Independent research has found that several varieties of GMO corn caused organ damage in rats. Other studies have found that animals were losing their ability to reproduce. There are also concerns that GMOs can increase allergies or cause immune system problems.
Environmental issues are also a cause for concern. GMOs allow farmers to use more weed killers, exposing both us and the environment to more toxins. Super weeds and super bugs that are resistant to the weed killers and the pesticides built into GMOs are now showing up. In addition, GMO crops can cross pollinate with non-GMO crops, irreversibly changing the face of plant life with unknown consequences.
Are they labeled?
The U.S. is one of the only developed nations that does not require labeling of GMOs. Fifty countries including all of Europe and even China require labeling of genetically modified foods. Many European countries have banned GMOs.
Even though they have been in our food supply since 1996, most people in the U.S. know little about GMOs. Actually, the 2006 Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology poll found that only 26% of American consumers believe that they have ever eaten a food that was genetically engineered. The truth is most people, including babies and children, eat them every single day.
Will labeling genetically modified foods increase the cost of food?
The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act will not increase the cost of food for you or food producers. It simply adds a label to genetically engineered food. Companies change their labels all the time. Remember, when companies were required by law to add trans fats to labels, the cost of food did not go up.
What can I do to eat fewer genetically engineered foods?
  • Vote "yes" on the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, which will require that genetically engineered foods are labeled. It will be on the November 2012 ballot. Once GMOs are labeled, we can make an informed choice. We have a right to know what's in the food we are eating and feeding to our families. Visit http://www.carighttoknow.org for more information.

  • Buy Organic. All USDA certified organic foods are free of GMOs.

  • Avoid nonorganic products that contain GMO foods including soy, corn, canola, cottonseed, and sugar beets. Read labels. If the food contains high fructose corn syrup, corn oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, it probably contains GMOs.

  • Look for the "Non-GMO Project Verified" label. Some companies have voluntarily labeled their foods.

  • Shop at Trader Joe's. All of their produce and all Trader Joe's brand foods are free of GMOs. So look for "Trader Joe's" on the label.

  • Use the free iPhone app Shop No GMO.

  • Go to http://www.nongmoshoppingguide.com and download their shopping guide.

10 Tips to Eat Healthy While Traveling

When we are traveling, it is difficult to get fresh and organic food. This makes it so we eat something that we don't want or something that isn't as healthy. The choices are low and often leads to something that isn't that tasty. At the same time, it's difficult to bring around fresh food for a longer period of time. Follow these 10 tips to fuel and satisfy your tastebuds while remaining healthy.

Tip 1: Bring a travel bag

A travel cooler is a simple solution to keep your health while you are traveling. Sometimes, just bringing juice or a green smoothie makes a difference in your day. By doing this, you can bring things like kitcheree, soups, smoothies and food that you would normally have to refrigerate.

Tip 2: Get the right oils, vinegar and salt

Finding good oils and high quality fats is one of the reasons why restaurants often don't work. If you want to change your position with oils, bring coconut oil, flax oil or raw butter. Restaurants will fulfill your request to steam veggies or rice while allowing you to use your own oils and fats a s a compliment.

Tip 3: Bring Spirulina, Blue Green Algae or Greens

Spirulina is a way to boost your energy and remain balanced, even on the go. Add it into any travel bottle and mix with water. It has a great taste and adds in alkaline.

Tip 4: Oatmeal

Oats are some of the best travel foods and they are naturally healthy. They don't need to be refrigerated, they are light and they can be cooked first. Get a cup of hot water and cook it yourself while on the go! Add in raisins, a chopped apple and other flavors for a balanced meal.

Tip 5: What to Do with Fresh Fruit

Apples, oranges and bananas make great travel foods and are easy to carry with you. The ability to have these without refrigeration makes them even better to carry with you.

Tip 6: Add in Energy with Nuts, Seed and Dried Fruits

This is the travel tip that any healthy traveler already recognizes. Pack the nuts, seeds and dried fruits to add in the protein and fats you need.

Tip 7: Sandwiches

Sandwiches used to be a huge nutritional item but somehow have filtered out. They are best to combine with sprouted grain bread, high quality nut butter, fruit and vegetables. Your veggies don't need to get soggy if you pack all of the ingredients separately and then assemble it when you are ready to eat.

Tip 8: Wraps

Some of the best wraps are seaweed nori. These sometimes get soggy but they never lose their taste. You can also add in nuts, eggs, seeds, cheese, avocado, veggies or sprouts.

Tip 9: From Eggs to Potatoes

Cook them the night before and be ready for the added protein and snacks during your day. These can be healthy and filling while you are in an airport or traveling in the car.

Tip 10: Sardines

No one would suspect sardines as a way to move with travel. However, these work with cultured vegetables and other foods with toast. Just make sure you pack it right so you don't have problems with the smell.

With these tips, you can easily travel and not have difficulties with your health. Learn more healthy food recipes.

Why Should You Eat Organic Cereals?

What has made cereals enter the mainstream of food and why is every food marketer jumping on the bandwagon? There must be something significant that is making every food category vying to include this element in some form or the other. From products made for kids to items intended for adults hitting the gym or sports-ring, they are a part of every package today.

The interesting twist is that food marketers in our households have been selling us this power-source for many years, but we have not been listening carefully.

Cereals like Upma, Poha provide not only taste but also immense health benefits. Nowadays you can access ready to cook Upma mix.

Foxtail Millets Upma Mix: Regular use of foxtail is a good guard against coronary diseases and reduces chances of cardiac arrest and fatalities. Being a diabetic friendly food, it contains a fair amount of phenolic (a strong anti-oxidant) used to get rid of toxins in the body. People who cannot consume wheat are left with very few options as most of the products in the market like biscuits, bakery items like bread, etc., are made from Wheat. As a gluten free diet, foxtail millet is a perfect food for people suffering from Celiac, promoting digestion, increases energy levels and helping in maintaining cholesterol levels.

Sooji Rava Upma Mix: Sooji is very good for diabetics or those who wish to lose weight. Sooji is made from the durum wheat and is slow to digest, thus sustaining energy for a longer period of time.

Wheat Daliya Upma Mix: An excellent source of dietary fiber, Daliya is one of the best alternatives to wheat. It aids in weight loss, diabetes and prevents constipation. It is also used as a weaning food, to transition babies from breast milk to semi-solid food. Being rich in proteins it helps in building muscles.

Cereals need not be equated to Oats. Cereals like puffed paddy are simply store-houses of health. When one has to control weight without starving too much and without letting the stomach run empty, the best way is to eat a good organic cereal like puffed paddy, also called nel pori or aralu in the local language. It is a very good source of potassium, zinc, copper, thiamin, niacin, Vitamin B6 pantothenic acid, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and manganese. The presence of magnesium aids in enzyme function, energy boosters, strengthening heart muscles, preventing strokes and avoiding heart attacks. Magnesium is also linked to treatment of depression. You can make Bhel Puri with this puffed paddy.

Many recipes that are usually sacrificed by weight-conscious people can be easily remade with cereals like Wheat Daliya, Foxtail Millets, Rava Sooji and Puffed Paddy.

It is an added advantage when the cereals are organic. Organic crops are not exposed to synthetic pesticides, GMOs, and fertilizers that are petroleum-based or sewage sludge-based. Organic farming practices include the usage of natural fertilizers such as compost and manure to feed soil and plants. Crop rotation, mulching and tilling are used to control weeds, while insects are controlled using natural methods such as traps and birds.

Enjoy the comfort of organic cereals and the health that accompanies them.

Grass Fed Beef Versus Grain Fed Beef

The recent growing popularity of organic products has sparked a debate about grass-fed beef benefits versus the price you pay for it. Is the 2 - 3x supermarket price markup worth it? The bigger issue is more likely the overall health benefits of eating grass fed beef over the conventional grain or corn fed beef. This article will discuss the differences in how the grass fed and grain fed meats are created, processed and ultimately affect your health.

Definition

How cattle are raised will determine the quality and specific makeup of the meat. There are three phases to the process:

Phase 1. This is the infant stage - the calf is born, consumes only milk from its mother and eventually eats grass for the first time in a pasture at 7 - 9 months of age.

Phase 2. This stage is where the type of feeding methods change in the process. This phase will last from the end of phase 1 to just before the slaughter to yield the meat. grass fed beef eat grass from the ground while grain fed will eat a variety or different grains in a lot of cases in an enclosed environment.

Phase 3. This finishing stage is just before harvest which involves rapid growth. Some producers will use grain at this stage even though the cattle have been fed exclusively grass up to this point. This is the time when the cattle increase in weight faster than any other time frame. How they are fed will drastically change the finished product in both weight and quality of meat.

Your local supermarket or butcher shop will offer four types of meat which will vary in exposure to grain.

1. Veal - this is calf meat from phase 1 above. It has never been fed grain and will be predominantly males as they do not produce milk so are of lower value as adults.

2. Organic or 100% grass fed - cattle that have spent their whole lives in a pasture.

3. Initially grass fed beef but finished in phase 3 with grain.

4. Grain fed beef that have been raised in the conventional manner and have not eaten grass in a pasture at all.

This list (not surprisingly) is also in order of most expensive to least expensive.

The Benefits

Unfortunately the research on this topic is fairly limited as it is not a really popular concern to the public. With limited data, we will compare only the two extremes - 100% grass fed and 100% grain fed beef.

One research group did a comparison of grass fed and grain fed beef using samples from different farms in the continental USA. Having samples collected in this way takes into account the different regions of the country with differing quality of both grass and grains as feed. The meat tested is the same beef that you would find in a supermarket. All of the farms are the suppliers of meat to the local grocery stores, restaurants, burger joints, etc.

The results were not overly surprising - the nutrient profiles of the two types were very similar.

- the fat in grass fed meat is a darker yellow color possibly due to larger amounts of vitamin A and carotenoids

- slightly less marbling (lines of fat in the meat) in grain fed which makes it a little leaner

- a little less unsaturated fats but more omega-3's and saturated fats in grain fed beef (but not by very much)

- the ratio of omega-6 fats to omega-3 fats is much lower in grain fed beef at 2.45 compared to 9.6 for grass fed meat. Omega fats are known to have anti-inflammatory properties so the high ratio is much better.

There was a different study that looked at the effect of using grain in the last two months of cattle development. The findings showed that the longer grain was used, the more saturated fats were produced. This is the opposite of the previous research. The other results were the same.

Overall, the findings make the two types of meat very similar with only omega fats being better in grass fed beef.

Human Benefits

We have taken a look at the research involving the meat itself but what about feeding it to humans and seeing the result? Another group did a 4 week test where they fed two groups of people beef that was either grass fed or grain fed in the final phase of growth. The subjects underwent blood analysis which showed the grass fed beef group had significantly better levels of omega-3 fats, lower omega-6/omega-3 fat ratio and higher levels of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). DHA is a fish fatty acid that has been shown in research to improve memory and slow the progress of Alzheimer's disease.

Based on these findings, anyone who does not eat very much fish to obtain DHA would benefit from grass fed beef to obtain it, even if the amount is not as significant.

Commercial grain fed beef is notorious for containing antibiotics and artificial hormones as the cattle are treated in captivity. Grass fed beef would help lower the risk of exposure. Testing in this area is quite limited so some of it is speculation.

Is Peanut Butter Healthy? Amazing Peanut Butter Nutrition Facts

Many people ask, is peanut butter healthy? Is it not fattening? In this article I have some amazing peanut butter nutrition facts for you. Peanut butter is good for you. Like all nuts it has so many healthy fats that we require in our diet on a daily basis. However, some of us, like myself cannot tolerate peanuts at all, which is OK.

I have Crohn's disease, so my stomach cannot digest certain foods. But I eat all other nuts and they good for me. Peanuts are nuts, and nuts in general contain a lot of healthy fats. We need healthy fats in our diet everyday. Healthy fats will satisfy your appetite, control cravings and manage more stable blood sugar levels. How is that for healthy food. I recently bought organic macadamia butter.

If you get sick of peanut butter all the time, go for other nut butters like macadamia, almond, cashew or any other nut butter you can find. Organic is best. That macadamia butter I got is so good, I eat it as it is. It is rich in flavor, very tasty and very healthy. The other day I went to the supermarket and saw a product claiming to be healthier than peanut butter. There are many products as such on shelves, all wrapped in fancy and smart packaging trying to deceive you to buy them as they are "healthier" than the other natural product. While I cannot put a name here for this product - I can tell you why it was not healthier than normal peanut butter.

PB is basically just two ingredients: raw peanuts and some salt. Take note that they do not add too much salt to it so it is not high in sodium. The list of ingredients in this product includes - chemicals, preservatives, coloring and so on. The company that makes this, stripped all the healthy fats from the peanuts and then claimed it was 'low fat'. Very nice. Healthy fat does not make you fat, providing you combine it with healthy carbs and protein in your meal. Then they added some sugary syrups, dehydrated cane sugar which is exactly the white sugar you use every day to put in your coffee, and just to finish it off some refined starches. If you think that over processing of natural product is healthier than the product at its original state, think again. Mike Geary writes about all types of nutrition that will make your body burn fat and calorie 24/7.

Why buy quinoa? Simple, it's an amazing grain, a super food. Here are a few heartening reasons:

1. Buy your way to good health because it contains more high quality protein than any other grain. It is actually one of the best sources of protein in the vegetable kingdom.

That's right, it is a vegetable. Quinoa is a broad leaf plant vastly grown in South America, and the leaves are used in salads with other salad greens and served as a side dish, and the seeds of quinoa are consumed like grains and mostly substituted for rice. Quinoa in itself is a complete protein grain. It provides all the essential amino acids in a balanced fashion, close to the standard set by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Although it is always so much better if you wash it before cooking, to really enjoy its great flavor.

Enjoy Eating Healthy All Day

How can you start eating healthy at home?

Anyone who has gone through the weight loss journey will tell you that for the most part, the struggle is with making healthy food choices. Since fast food and processed food are often associated with convenience, it's hard to let go of old eating (and buying) habits.

But you can still beat a lifetime of bad habits!

It can be challenging to develop new eating habits, but it's not impossible at all. In fact, it is more difficult to keep unhealthy eating habits especially later in life when your body is already suffering from the effects of malnutrition. Remember: a person who has an unhealthy and unbalanced diet is also categorized as malnourished.

Why do you eat the way you do?

Your current eating habits are simply the result of years of repetition. That's why they're called habits. We weren't born with habits; we just develop them over time. So if you learned to love French fries, ice cream and chocolate shakes, you can learn to love healthy, natural foods just as much!

Are you ready for another positive change in your life?

In today's post, I am going to share with you some great ways that you can begin the transition to healthier eating. What's really great about the transition itself is that it is gradual. You can start enjoying fantastic weight loss success by gradually changing the contents of your daily meals. Let's get started!

Tip #1: Eat More Whole Grain

What is whole grain?

The Whole Grains Council defines "whole grain" as "food that contains all of the components of the grain seed in their original proportion." A grain seed has three components: bran, endosperm and germ.

All three components provide a treasure trove of natural nutrients that provide the body with complete nutrition. The cooking method doesn't matter as long as care is taken to preserve these three components.

Due to the density of nutrients found in whole grain, it is recommended that you have one to two servings of whole grain per day.

The dietary fiber found in whole grains will also help conquer hunger pains, as fiber expands when it comes into contact with water. Fiber will fill your stomach much faster and you will feel fuller more quickly.

What types of whole grain could you eat?

Three kinds of grains stand out in the world of fitness: brown rice, quinoa and millet. These three grain seeds are widely available and are crowd favorites because they're tasty and easy to prepare, too!

Quinoa is considered as a fitness superfood because of its exceptionally high levels of plant protein, which is useful for fitness enthusiasts who want to build lean muscle while slimming down.

You may also try grain seeds such as amaranth, rye, sorghum and barley if the first 3 types don't appeal to you.

Tip #2: Skip Oily Food

Why be mindful of fatty food?

Fats are essential for the body, but only in very small quantities. The amount of oil found in processed food and fast food is too much to maintain a healthy weight. Also watch out for "calorie traps" at home, like bacon strips and burger patties.

A single strip of bacon can have as much as 50 calories. If you eat 5 bacon strips at breakfast, you've already added 250 calories of energy to your reserve for the day.

If your physical activities for the day do not burn off most of the calories that you have consumed from the moment that you woke up, your weight will eventually increase. That's why it's essential that you identify high-calorie foods at home that do not provide a lot of nutritional value.

To keep your mealtimes interesting, opt for healthier alternatives such as egg whites and roasted veggies. Flavor-wise, vegetables have a lot of to offer. That's why kebabs don't taste like kebabs unless you add the roasted veggies!

Tip #3: Be Your Own Nutrition Guru

One of the best ways to learn about healthy food is by preparing them at home and by experimenting with different combinations and recipes.

Reading about healthy eating is one thing; you need to put your newfound knowledge to the test if you want to speed up the transition process. Here are some simple tips to make your home cooking healthier:

- Use extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) as much as possible and only in small quantities

- Reduce the amount of cheese and cream in your dishes

- Season with a variety of spices and avoid salting too much

- Top breads and pizza with mushrooms and tasty veggies

- Learn how to store cooked food to retain their nutrients and to make home cooking more convenient than fast food

One of the most important differences between regular dairy farmers and organic dairy farmers is in how they deal with the cows. There is a specific regulation and detailed regime that an organic milk dairy farmer must follow in order for them to maintain their certification. One of the most important things for the farmers to do is to allow the cows a chance to graze naturally. This is something that must be done a lot in order for the cow to have a set internal program that will keep the cows producing quality milk. It is said that in some areas, the farmers must allow for 120 days of pasture grazing by the cows in order for the milk to be considered organic in nature.
If you take this fact and the fact that the cows are not given any form of growth enhancement or hormones of any kind, you will see that the milk simply tastes better. Often you will find that dairy farmers will feed their cows grain or corn feed. This is not a natural source of food for a cow, so the milk is not considered natural either.
Panel Says
If you were to place 10 people in a room for a blind taste test between regular cow's milk and organic milk from a cow, it should come as no surprise as to which milk would be preferred. Often tests will show that 8 of the 10 people will immediately choose the organic variety opposed to the standard milk, while 1 will be on the fence. This should serve as a pretty good indicator for stores that are curious about the impact of introducing this type of dairy product into their stores for sale. When it comes right down to it, the organic entries are easy to sell due to the healthy living movement that is sweeping the nation.
If you are looking for a quality of life change for the better, you should look into the small things as much as you do exercise. One of the best changes will be in what you eat and you can improve this portion of your life with organic milk.
