What You Need To Know About Fish Oil

Fish oil is a type of fatty acid that is derived from the tissues of oily fish. It contains omega-3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). If you can't access the fish oil, there are plenty of supplements in the market that you can take.

Benefits of fish oil

There are plenty of advantages that come with taking the oil. Some of these advantages include:

Cholesterol control: Cholesterol levels in your body are not only essential for the health of your heart, but they are also important to your entire body. Experts show that taking 3-6 grams of fish oil every day aids in promoting a healthy balance of high-density lipoproteins and low-density lipoproteins. The oil has also been found to promote healthy levels of triacylglycerol concentrations in the body.

To support healthy cholesterol levels, you should support the intake of the oil by taking diets rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Bone support: Bone support is important to women, especially those entering the menopausal years. As you get older as a woman, there aren't the standard progesterone and estrogen hormone levels, and this provokes the bones to begin thinning. Studies show that oil from fish promotes bone health thus you don't lose as much calcium as you should.

To get the most from taking fish oil, you should maintain a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Remember that taking more too much or too little of each would put your bones at even more risk.

Mood support: Do you struggle with anxiety and depression? Consumption of this oil has been attributed with increased mood and positivity in life. According to scientists, when you consume fish oil you increase serotonin levels in the body. As you know, serotonin is a "feel-good" hormone thus you feel good about yourself. To get the most from this hormone, you should take oil of fish after eating a carbohydrate-heavy meal.

Tips to consider when using fish oil

While many companies are selling the supplements both online and offline, not all are reputable. To be confident that you are buying a genuine product, buy the oil from a renowned company. In addition to buying from a reputable company, you should also ensure that you take the oil correctly.

The AHA recommends that you take up to 3 grams of fish oil every day. Taking high doses is often accompanied by side effects that include: fishy breath, fishy taste in the mouth, loose stools, nausea, and stomach upset. You also have increased the risk of bleeding.

If you want to take high doses of the supplement, you should talk to your doctor first who will come up with a plan on how you can safely take the supplements without developing the side effects. Some people have high triglyceride levels, if you are one of the people, you should speak to your doctor before you start taking the supplements.

Conclusion

This is what you need to know about this oil. To get the most from the supplements, buy them from a reputable company. You also should take them correctly.

How Important is Natural Omega 3 Complex For Promoting Health?

Natural omega 3 complex is required for controlling cholesterol levels in the body and for the prevention of problems and conditions related to the heart. Because of this reason many people take omega 3 supplements in large quantities to become overall fit and healthy.

It has been found that fish oil is the only richest known source of two of the most important omega 3 fats - DHA and EPA. Fish oil is therefore utilized in making omega 3 supplements like natrol omega 3 complex and many others.

These supplements are effective and a person of any age group and build can use them without any reservations. They don't have any side effects associated with their consumption and are totally safe and pure.

People also use omega 3 fish oil supplements to get relief in inflammatory conditions like arthritis and cystitis. EPA is known for reducing inflammation throughout the body and is therefore an essential nutrient for elderly people.

DHA is good for the memory and it also prevents mental conditions like depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. It has been found that schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease occur mainly due to DHA deficiency in the body. Hyperactivity which is becoming very common among growing children also occurs as a result of DHA deficiency.

The above mentioned facts show how much important omega 3 fats are for our health and body. They should be consumed on a regular basis either through diet or through nutritional supplements. Normally 300 to 400 mg of both fats combined is required by an average, healthy person.

If you eat fish regularly you are at reduced risk of developing heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes and some degenerative diseases. A good fatty fish like salmon, herring and hoki provides up to 1000 mg of DHA and EPA combined. The oil of these fish can also be consumed in raw form or in the form of fish oil capsules which are easily available on the market for purchase.

It has been found that only pharmaceutical grade fish oil is effective and free from impurities. Other low grade fish oils are not refined and they may cause side effects, allergies and infections. Because of this reason it is strongly recommended that you buy a fish oil product from a reputable company.

Omega 3 supplements should be consumed by people of all ages since they are helpful in the prevention of many diseases and also promote overall health and well-being.

Wild Salmon Vs Farm Raised Salmon

Many people don't know the difference between wild salmon and farm raised salmon. For example, when you go to the grocery store and see fresh wild salmon fillets it is usually not from the Pacific Ocean. The fillets came from the Atlantic Ocean where they have farms, that raise salmon that were wild at one point in time and were given special formulated feed in a fish farm. True wild salmon thrive out in the Pacific Ocean. They are born in a stream, swim out to the ocean, grow in the ocean, swim back to where they were hatched from, mate, lay eggs, and will shortly end up dying afterwords.

Atlantic Salmon are placed in a hatchery, grow, and feed in a restricted area, majority of the time they are turned into commercial food products and are exported across the world to other countries or in grocery stores. This Atlantic Ocean process of salmon hatchery is called aquaculture and is done in other countries and places like, The Great Lakes. In the United States the salmon farms make approximately is higher than 80 percent of the salmon that are on the market each day. Thirty percent comes from the traditional hatcheries and the other fifty percent are raised in aquaculture or open pen nets off shore. These farms can raise up to one million salmon a time. The farmed salmon are confined, fed a steady diet of special formulated protein food pellets, and when they eat it, they become fatter than wild salmon, with not much more omega-3 than expected, but actually less per every three ounces.

Farm raised salmon don't have as healthy amount of fatty acids as wild salmon does. Carcinogenic chemicals are found in farmed raised salmon and are purchased from U.S. Grocery stores have so much higher levels of PCB that pose an increased risk for cancer. The United States has banned PCB to be used in all items, but they persist in the environment and end up in animal fat. When the farmed salmon from U.S. Grocery stores were tested, their salmon that was farmed contained up to twice the fat of wild salmon. The test also found sixteen times the PCB compared to those found wild salmon, four times the levels in beef, and 3.4 times the levels found in other types of seafood.

Other studies have shown in Canada, Ireland, and Britain have found their results the same or similar. Diseases and parasites, which normally exist in extremely low levels in fish scattered around the oceans, could run rampant in a densely packed oceanic feedlots. There chances for survival, farmed fish are vaccinated, while as small fry, and later are given antibiotics or pesticides to avoid the infections. Sea lice, is another particular problem, in a study a fisherman brought two baby pink salmon covered with them. A bioligist later went around salmon farms examining more than seven hundred baby pink salmon and found out that seventy-eight percent were covered with a fatal load of sea lice while, juvenile salmon that she netted farther from the farms were largely lice-free.

Sea lice, in particular, are a problem. In a recent L.A. Times story, Alexandra Morton, an independent biologist and critic of salmon farms, is quoted as beginning to see sea lice in 2001 when a fisherman brought her two baby pink salmon covered with them. Examining more than 700 baby pink salmon around farms, she found that 78 percent were covered with a fatal load of sea lice while juvenile salmon she netted farther from the farms were largely lice-free. Well, there you have it unless you want cancer, want to eat a sick fish, or would you rather have healthy wild salmon that is not farm raised and is a cancer fighter, there is no contest eat wild salmon.

Good Hair Starts With Good Nutrition

Many of my patients, particularly those over 40, ask me if there is anything they can do about the look of their hair - it's lost its healthy, youthful shine, and just doesn't seem to be as thick as it used to be. There's a whole lot you can do for your hair just by following some simple rules of good nutrition and supplementing with the correct vitamins.
When your body is healthy, it shows in your hair and your nails. In fact, I can often tell when a patient's nutritional status is out of whack just by looking at their hair and nails as they are made from the same substance, keratin. Ideally, your hair should have a healthy density and texture, it's not falling out, and it grows about ½ inch a month. Your nails are smooth without ridges, clear, non-yellowed, don't chip and peel and grow normally.
A holistic approach to restoring the health and glow of your hair and nails is necessary by starting with some good, basic rules of nutrition that will also benefit the health of your entire body.
Good Nutrition, Good Health, Good Hair
Protein: As I mentioned above, your hair (and your nails) are made out of the same material called keratin, a protein. In order to ensure that this building block of your hair and nails is adequate to produce healthy hair shafts, you need to eat an adequate amount of high quality protein everyday. You should consume at least 50 grams (read labels) of this type of protein on a daily basis, some of which are good sources of B vitamins that are also crucial to hair health. These include:
•Chicken - rich source of B vitamins
•Fish - good source of B vitamins
•Beef - rich in B12 and other B vitamins.
•Amino acids - like L-cysteine and L-methionine, proteins that benefit hair texture and growth. In addition to being found in protein foods, they can also be found in protein supplement/shake formulas like whey protein. Read labels for amino acid content.
In addition, there are many plant-based, quality proteins that are useful to your overall health as well as your hair which include:
•Legumes - (chick peas, lentils, kidney beans, black eyed peas, navy beans)
•Whole grains - like quinoa, brown rice, amaranth
Vitamins: Your body requires the right amount of many vitamins and minerals to support all its various functions, but when it comes to your hair and nails, the B family of vitamins rules. In fact, deficiencies in the B group of vitamins, particularly folic acid, B6 and B12, will show up most profoundly in lack of hair and nail health. Hair loss, lack of growth, dullness is often a result of deficiencies in these vitamins. The good news is that these conditions can be turned around restoring hair health as soon as these deficiencies are corrected. B vitamins are easily supplemented with a good quality B-Complex formula. They are also found in high quantities in the following sources:
•B9 (folic acid) - spinach, asparagus, romaine lettuce, turnip and mustard greens, broccoli, parsley, calf's liver, legumes (all).
•B6 - yellow fin tuna, chicken and bananas contain the highest food sources. Other good sources include turkey breast, cod, salmon, and beef. Deficiencies in B6 can cause hair loss particularly in men.
•B12 - calf's liver, sardines, snapper, and beef contain the highest food sources.
Supporting Vitamins: Your hair (and the rest of you) also benefits from a good intake of other vitamins that support hair health. They are:
•Vitamin C - helps to build collagen, a building block of keratin. Aids in scalp circulation as it supports blood capillaries. 1,000-2,000 mg daily. Good sources include citrus fruits.
•Vitamin E - helps with oxygen uptake, stimulates immune function (which stimulates hair growth). 400 mg daily.
•Vitamin A - watch for over-consumption of food, supplements, containing this vitamin as it can cause hair loss! No more than 10,000 IU daily, preferably from natural food sources of beta-carotene. Good sources include: sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, and carrots.
Minerals: Good health requires a lot of different minerals to thrive. In particular, your hair benefits from magnesium, sulfur and zinc. Laboratory studies have shown that animals deficient in magnesium lost large amounts of hair! Here are some good sources of all:
•Magnesium - pumpkin seeds (raw), rich source. Black and navy beans (cooked). Salmon, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds.
•Sulfur - sunflower seeds, lentils, garlic, yogurt.
•Zinc - beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, salmon, dairy products, peanuts, legumes, whole grains, potatoes, yogurt.
•Iron - anemia can lead to hair loss, shine and beauty. If you are a premenopausal woman you need 18 mg of iron a day. For older women and men, the requirement is 8 mg per day. Be sure your vitamin/mineral supplement has the correct amount of iron in it for your age. Over-consuming iron can create heart and liver damage. Have your iron levels tested to determine if anemia might be contributing to your hair and other health concerns.
Other Nutrients: Other nutrients that are beneficial to hair health are:
•Co-Q10: 60 mg a day.
•Essential fatty acids: Like fish oil, super primrose oil, 1,000 mg a day.
Here you have my recommendations of how to restore your hair shine and health from the inside out. Remember that TV commercial that showed a model with long, thick, luxuriant beautiful hair who told viewers, "Don't hate me because my hair is beautiful"? Well, of course, she was selling some product that promised to make your hair look just like hers.
The truth is, there are no external products that can completely restore hair health and beauty. They can smooth out frizzies, or add a little oil for some temporary shine and control, but ultimately hair health and beauty has to come from deep within your nutritional matrix. So, eat not only for your health, but to keep your crowning glory thriving for a lifetime!
